In this month’s meeting we will be hearing from Jon Fletcher, director of the Big Clean Switch and expert in understanding and delivering behavior change:
Overview
Big Clean Switch is a new campaign that aims to help 250,000 homes switch to clean electricity in the next two years. They partner with other organisations to help their stakeholders switch to a choice of four suppliers, all of which source 100% of their electricity from renewables. In the process, most homes save money on their energy bills (£174 a year on average). The campaign shares the commission it receives from the suppliers with partner organisations, so there is also scope either to generate additional funds, or to put that money towards good causes (investing in solar panels for schools, for example).
Research
Between May and September 2016 we carried out three phases of consumer insight work aimed at understanding what makes people switch to clean energy and more importantly, what stops them:
• The first phase was a rapid literature review that gathered the main evidence about energy switching behaviours
• The second phase was a series of focus groups that explored why people feel the way they do about both clean and conventional energy tariffs, and tested different ways of ‘framing’ clean energy to ‘mainstream’ its appeal beyond people with a strong interest in the environment.
• The final phase was a nationally representative survey of 2,009 people that tested frames quantitatively and explored responses to different types of clean energy messaging.
Jon will present on some of the key findings from his research that can be applied to your work when delivering behavior change initiatives at an organizational level.
