Our virtual discussion groups provide an opportunity to share challenges, learning, initiatives, progress, resources and questions with other members across the network on a range of topics such as scope 3 emissions.

Greenhouse gas emissions are categorised into three groups or 'Scopes' by the widely-used international accounting tool, the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol.  With many organisations now getting to grips with scope 1 & 2 emissions; identifying, understanding, measuring, reporting and reducing scope 3 emissions is a significant challenge (and opportunity) for many.  For many organisations, scope 3 emissions make up a significant proportion of all carbon emissions and can often lie outside their own direct control and operations.

Scope 1: Direct emissions from owned or controlled sources.  Includes on-site energy (natural gas and fuel), refrigerants, other combustion and fleet vehicles.

Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased energy e.g. electricity

Scope 3: Indirect value chain emissions, the result of activities from assets not owned or controlled by an organisation, includes:

•Purchased goods and services (supply chains)
•Business travel and Employee commuting
•Waste disposal
•Use of sold products
•Transportation and distribution (up- and downstream)
•Investments
•Leased assets and franchises

Fit for the Future have (and will continue) to support members with key scope 3 strategies e.g. transport, waste, procurement etc through specific focused events but are also supporting in the broader sharing and development of scope 3 strategy.  This discussion group will enable members to share challenges, learning, initiatives, progress, opportunities, resources and questions with other members in this key area.  Including:

•How do you identify and calculate/estimate your baseline scope 3 emissions?
•What are they?  What do you include?  Where are the emission hotspots?
•How do you set realistic scope 3 reduction targets?
•How do you get engagement and buy-in from all levels of your organisation?
•What guidance and resources are available to support you? How can we share scope 3 learning and resources in the network?
•How do you move from scope 3 target setting to developing a strategy and practical/impactful activity for delivery?
•How do you monitor and demonstrate progress?
•How do scope 3 emissions fit in with an organisations overall sustainability policy, strategy and action plan, including net zero target setting (scope 3 being a major challenge of net zero)?
•What are the cost reduction opportunities?

Any member is welcome to attend, regardless of previous experience or knowledge on this topic.  The discussion group will be of benefit to all network members, whatever your size and scope of operations/activity.

Once you have registered, we will be in touch to identify any specific topics you would like the group to focus on.  To get the discussion going, we are delighted that Lauren Wiseman (Environmental Manager, WWF-UK) will provide an overview of WWF-UK’s approach to scope 3.

If you have an initiative, you are developing of delivering we would love to hear from you and share your experiences, please do get in touch.
