Following on from our recent and successful event Responsible Retrofit with the STBA & Historic England Fit for the Future is keen to continue supporting members in this key area.

Roger Curtis (Technical Research Manager) from Historic Environment Scotland will introduce their approach to traditional and historic building refurbishment and the background principles that guide the thinking. The idea of ‘Conservation Retrofit’ will be introduced, with a focus on:

· Fabric retention and upgrade, and the carbon benefits through the minimisation of waste

· The offsetting of carbon with grown materials

· Accepting limits of thermal upgrade

· How new options from a decarbonised grid will contribute to achieving net zero

Roger will provide context for these issues by providing details of an embodied carbon accounting exercise that is being carried out on one of Historic Environment Scotland’s pilot buildings.
